Wastewater ion exchange (WWIX) is a technique used to purify wastewater or other industrial water streams. The process involves the exchange of ions between two streams, one a contaminated water and the other a regenerant solution, which acts both as a regenerant for, and a buffer to, the contaminated water. WWIX process is used to reduce the concentrations of inorganic as well as organic contaminants, which are either removed entirely or transformed into innocuous chemicals. It is also used to recover valuable ions of metals from wastewater. In the WWIX process, contaminated water passes through an ion exchange resin, which selectively adsorbs the contaminants onto its surface. The contaminated resin is then backwashed and regenerated with the appropriate regenerant solution. During the regeneration step, the contaminant ions are eluted from the resin, resulting in a purified water stream.
